Online photography platform Flickr, which is owned by SmugMug, has announced the establishment of a 501(c)(3) nonprofit called The Flickr Foundation – an attempt to preserve cultural and historical legacies within the medium and practice of photography. So far, the foundation has been directly funded by SmugMug and Flickr
The Flickr Foundation aims to share a collection of world-renowned photography and culturally significant images, creating an online resource, with the express goal of preserving photography for the next few hundred years. The foundation will develop programs in four areas of cultural preservation: Flickr Commons, content mobility, creative archiving, and fostering new curators.
